Well done! For being in the UK for a bit you sure have the American political climate pegged. I try to keep my beliefs based "on the issues" but that seems like an impossible task here, all parties (2 in particular) frustrate me beyond belief. For years I tried to just turn my head to it all, now approaching 40 with a family, all the sudden the issues really matter. Guess I'm growing up... take care!

Oh Megan, this is so well writtten!! I do feel awful about how divisive partisan politics is here. Two parties makes it particularly so. I say, forget the parties. Let each candidate stand for what issues they believe in and then people can choose between them.

Should I ever have the opportunity to blow my own horn on that box in Hyde Park I would announce to the world that campaign lies should be cpmpletely banned and that the media need to monitor that and whistle blow anyone who tries it.

People believe the lies and they develop these fears that should not exist. Now I need to save up for a trip to Hyde Park!!! I'd gett op see some cutie pies as well in your sweet unrennovated home!

AHH Megan - you grow and grow. It's great to have your own speakers corner isn't it? I can see your American upbringing causes you a lot of conflict and frustration with the British way of life. If this blog allows you nothing but an outlet to vent your spleen then go right ahead girl - that's how you get to the point where you say - actually I;ve got better things to spend my time on than beaurocracy. Live and let live and expend your energy only on things you can change not on things you can't. It makes life more enjoyable and less stressful. Love life and live life.

Ahaha! So, Pete, social encounters with conversatives in your life is something to "get through" you say! Since you are a man who is known (at least to me) for his tact and diplomacy, I couldn't resist pointing that out. Kidding aside, I do know what you mean really, albeit from the opposite perspective. That said, except for conversations with M & P, I'm not fond of "spirited" political discussions because I'm a lousy debater. Except on paper. If everyone's on the same side though, I can enjoy it until it gets vicsious. Then it's time for me to tug on John's sleeve and go home. Love my lib fam.p.s. Love love love the idea of three parties.

Well this was a great post - so much of it echoing the internal debate I find myself in. I've maintained for quite some time that political orientation is a false distinction: it doesn't exist in nature the way, say, sexual orientation does. Remembering that helps me get through many a social encounters with the conservatives in my life. Great post!

Hey, Megan, great to read your comparison of politiics in England and the US. We are very impressed with the cooperative government between the Tories and the Lefties. It's fascinating to hear you say that a third party blurs the line in the sand that we have between the democrates and the republication. We are very impressed. Your building laws are weired. Adding two feet is forbidden because cars might see into your living room after the trees die? Give me a fucking break! Paul, take note. I do not understand the prohibition of nuts in school. We have the same thing at the Polling Institute regarding nuts and popcorn.

Your old neighborhood school, Nicholson Elementary has also informed me that one of my kid's classmates has a nut allergy. So, now, they've implemented a school-wide ban on all Nut products. Thing is.. it's too hard to separate nut items made in a nut factory and vice-versa.. how crazy is this? You simply cannot escape the nuts! How funny is that?? I suppose we are unraveling in a world that already has bad water, bad air and bad politics. Call me crazy, but I never even heard of a nut allergy when I was growing up, but then again, we didn't have snack time during school and we all walked home for lunch. Problem solved. Anyhow, great blog Megan! Hope you live through your reno without losing your sanity!

Love it too! I would share my views but for risk of not sounding politically correct in a public forum, I'll refrain. ;) xx
